Ok I guess I will start with I am a simple college student who someday wants to own a cane rod. Nothing special, but I would like a very fishable 6 wt or something to that extent. I have also found myself very interested in building my own rods but I have been apprehensive because I am not sure if there are many tools needed or I think I am just nervous about messing up huge. Which brings me to the big question.

Is it too much of a leap to find a older, very used, beat up rod and try and refinish it to the point where I could use it. I would imagine many people begin with graphite to build rods because it seems easier. But I really don't want a new rod unless its cane. Could I cheeply buy the necessary tools and hardware to refinish a cane? I am sorry this is really not specific, but I guess I just want someone to tell me its ok and give it a try.
