Poking around on the interweb, I came across Larry Jurgen's neat site http://lojsflytyingbugstuff.blogspot.com
and this blast from the past. Simpler times, simpler flies.

hook - Dai Riki 320 #14
thread - Uni 8/0 Light Cahill
tails - Mallard (dyed woodduck)
body - UTC 140 thread red
wing - Poly yarn yellow
hackle - grizzly

Part 1

mash barb, attach the red thread at 60% mark and wrap back to point above barb

take a clump of mallard fibers (even tips), measure for length (hook shank) and tie in

trim butts, smooth with thread wraps and create tapered body

tie in the 8/0 thread; tie off and trim the body thread

tie in a clump of poly yarn; let it hang long over the back

create a thread dam at the 80% mark to raise the front wing

tie in hackle
