    Default Cutthroat Candy SBS

Poking around on the interweb, I came across Larry Jurgen's neat site http://lojsflytyingbugstuff.blogspot.com
and this blast from the past. Simpler times, simpler flies.

    hook - Dai Riki 320 #14
thread - Uni 8/0 Light Cahill
    tails - Mallard (dyed woodduck)
body - UTC 140 thread red
    wing - Poly yarn yellow
    hackle - grizzly

    Part 1

mash barb, attach the red thread at 60% mark and wrap back to point above barb

take a clump of mallard fibers (even tips), measure for length (hook shank) and tie in

trim butts, smooth with thread wraps and create tapered body

tie in the 8/0 thread; tie off and trim the body thread

tie in a clump of poly yarn; let it hang long over the back

create a thread dam at the 80% mark to raise the front wing

    tie in hackle

    Part 2

4 wraps behind, 3 in the front; half hitch x 2, trim and SHHAN

trim the wing front and back; go find a cutthroat

Here's a version with a razor foam abdomen for a bit more positive buoyancy; on a #16 or #18 it'd make a passable Yellow Sally

By the way, they worked pretty well here

    Regards,
    Scott

That pattern looks like a killer. Used to fish a red humpy tied with grizzly hackle and yellow poly yarn wings out west quite a bit. The cutts loved it.

    Nice SBS!

Scott: Thanks for the pattern & the excellent instructions & photos. I thought that fly would be a excellent pattern for chasing both large and small mouth bass provided it was tied in a larger version. So I tied some up using a Mustad 9671 in size 10. I also used red floss for the body as floatation was not a factor. I will be giving those warm water fish a shot with it come next spring. Thanks again.

Funny how different flies have the same name. The Cutthroat Candy I'd seen before was just a Coachman Trude with white rubber legs.

    That's for Ralph.

    Walter,

I saw that version, too, after I found Larry Jurgen's. If I'm putting legs on a Trude, I prefer to just tie up a Convertible.
