hook - Mustad 79580 #6
thread - Danville Flymaster brown
body - yarn tan
rib - copper wire
wing - hen pheasant (located on side of the body under the wings)
throat - hackle red/yellow (Chinese streamer cape)


Found one of these while going through my streamer boxes; must have tied it up in the late 90's for some of the PA spring creeks I used to fish. Took a while to come up with the pattern but I finally found it in an old issue of the Mid Atlantic Flyfishing Guide; attributed to Ed Wentzler, only thing I changed was the throat - he used bucktail, I prefer hackle. The hen pheasant feathers simulate parr marks on juvie trout, which the adults seem to find tasty. A very simple tie, and a very effective fly.




Part 1


mash barb, attach thread at 75% mark, tie in rib and wrap back to point above barb










tie in yarn and wrap body










prepare 2 well-marked feathers per side; measure for length and strip fibers off one side (except for tail)










tie in wing at head







pull wing back along hook, spread fibers at tail







wrap wire, Matuka style, through wing to the front; helicopter wire and tie off

Part 2

prepare red and yellow hackle (webby is good, you want the fibers to reach back to the hook point), tie in by tips




wrap hackle and tie off; trim out tips





wet fingers and stroke hackle fibers down & back





grab fibers under hook





and cover with thread wraps; whip finish, SHHAN and you're done

Scott, thanks for the SBS. I will have to tie some for my streamer box with the addition of a Muddler head to them.

Scott, you said just enough to confuse me (my wife would probably tell you it doesn't take much). Your quote "prepare 2 well-marked feathers per side; measure for length and strip fibers off one side (except for tail)".

I understand that as a total of 4 feathers. Is that correct?
