    Default Bloody Butcher Salmonfly SBS

Found this in Trout Flies of the West. Original (tied by Ray Babineau) body was red/yellow hackle wrapped/trimmed; after playing around with the Strawman caddis, I figured I'd try it with deer hair in split thread. Practical? maybe not so much, but fun? yes.

    hook - Tiemco 5212 #4
    thread - UTC 140 red
egg sac - 2mm foam black
body - deer hair red/yellow mix
    wing - elk hair
    head - elk hair

    Part 1

mash barb, attach thread at 75% mark and wrap back to point above barb

apply a little Super Glue and tie in foam strip; fold over to create egg sac and cover with thread

cut clumps of red and yellow deer hair, mix and grab with clip; don't use too much or it won't spin properly in the thread loop

split thread, insert deer, and spin bobbin

sweep fibers back as you wrap the "hackle" forward

    lather, rinse, repeat as needed

    Part 2

    tie off, trim body

re-attach thread, finish 1 eye width back

stack, clean a clump of elk; measure for length (shank x 2)

2 soft loops, pull tight, and let it spin

stack, clean another clump of elk and tie in

    Part 3

push hair back with finger, make sure it's evenly dispersed around hook; tie down

whip finish, SHHAN and trim out bottom the bottom hair

Doesn't look like any salmonfly I've seen, but it'll be worth a few casts just for giggles.

Pretty neat, nice tie. I would probably add a set of rubber legs at the collar.

An excellent step by step (as usual) and an unusual fly. The title threw me completely. There is a Butcher salmon fly. The details are here, There is also the Bloody Butcher a wet fly for trout and sea trout. I don't have a picture of a Bloody Butcher in my collection but here is the original Butcher trout fly, the Bloody Butcher uses a dyed red hackle in place of the black at the throat.

Your fly was not at all what I was expecting when I saw the title.
    Cheers,
    A.
