Default Bomber Tied Down Caddis SBS

Natural version (for all the foam haters out there)

    hook - Tiemco 5212
thread - UTC 140 burnt orange
    tail/back - deer hair
    body - deer hair orange
    hackle (body) - ginger
    hackle (front) - brown

    Part 1

mash barb, attach thread at back end and wrap back to point above barb (leave tag end long)

clean a clump of deer hair (no need to stack, trim to length)

2 soft loops then allow to spin; pack it tight with fingernails

    repeat

    and again

flip it over on it's back, lay a razor blade on hook eye and push straight back

have at it with your favorite cutting implements; taper body (looks like I came up a bit chubby on this one)

tie in body hackle, wrap to the back and tie off with tag end of thread (not sure if this is the best way; may start at the back next time and go forward)

    Part 2

rest of the fly is the same as the foam version

clean, stack a clump of deer and measure for length (hook gap)

tie in, trim hair butts, cover with thread wraps and tie in front hackle

wrap hackle, tie off and trim

pull deer hair back and tie down

half hitch x 2, SHHAN front and back and you're done

    Regards,
    Scott

Nice tie, as always, Scott but that is one odd looking fly. Any idea who the originator is and what its origins are? Looks like an strange mix of different patterns, and while I might fish it during an October Caddis hatch, not sure when else I'd ever use such a pattern.

    Thanks.

Based on the limited research I did, the pattern (poly yarn body) was often used on the Deschutes as a stonefly (in these colors I'd guess a salmonfly). Charlie Craven has a version http://www.charliesflyboxinc.com/fly...m?parentID=149 without the front hackle that he uses as a caddis emerger. I tied it with the spun deer hair body just for fun (and because I knew someone on another forum who has an aversion to foam would give me grief).

    Regards,
    Scott

The deer hair body is a new (to me) twist on an old pattern.

The "original" Tied-down Caddis, with a dubbed or yarn body and no front hackle, has been around in the Northwest for a long time. It can be fished dry or wet. It could be used to imitate a Caddis or a Stonefly or as an attractor.

Tie that in pink or blue on a looped eye salmon hook and cast it on frog water with silvers underneath and it just might be the most explosive topwater action you have ever seen...

    I hate foam...

Found the front hackled version in Flies of the Northwest (great book, by the way). Bruce Salzburg also has a nice one over on Han's site http://www.danica.com/flytier/bsalzb...own_caddis.htm

Tied this one with moose body hair over the back and a fanned front, with the idea it could push a little water

    Scott,

After seeing the first one you posted, I had the same thought about flaring the butts of the wing in front. That could make a great Steelhead waking fly.
