pine squirrel soft hackle

Maybe it would be more correctly called a wet fly, but something to try for all you soft hackle fans, incorporating the fish getting material pine squirrel. According to Dave Hughes, these have been around since the 1800's http://books.google.com/books?id=8sG...hackle&f=false This link has a great SBS and is taken from the book Trout Flies. It is a little bit of a train wreck at first when you are learning to use the thread loop.

I usually tie them with a tail, so I guess they are more of a streamer. The body is a mixed dubbing using ice dub and pine squirrel. I have had great luck with this on our local trout streams last spring.

Whether it's a streamer, wet fly or soft hackle, that's a cool fly. For hair/fur hackle flies (like a Casual Dress) I like to insert the fur into split thread (I have one of those Petijean clips to hold the fur but just about any plastic bag clip would do), spin and wrap it; I find it a lot easier than the waxed thread/loop method, but both get the job done.
