    Default What is this fly?

In the latest edition of American Angler there is a picture of a small nymph, I'd guess about a size 18. The fly is not identified. It appears to be a Pheasant Tail with the ribbing wire used to form the Thorax. Does anyone know what this pattern is called?

    Oldster,

There are certain numbers that cause a link to something else like your 18.

I don't take the American Angler but I just wanted to mention that the original Pheasant Tail Nymph was made up of only three items: The hook, a few pieces of pheasant tail and a copper wire which was used to secure the pheasant tail and was wrapped up to form the thorax. No thread, nothing else. Maybe that is what the fly is then?

I also saw that fly and I think Sagefisher is right on. That's how Sawyer tied the original PTN as I understand.

I'll think you'll find the original will often outfish the Americanized version. It was designed to sink like a rock (and then be lifted to the surface right in front of a fish.)
