    Default Wipers

Rick Z, if you want to try for Wipers on flies, I recommend you try Red Rock Spillway ASAP. Had a great day on the east side on 7-25-2013. I caught White Bass up to 16", and the Wipers were probably averaging 18" or so. Caught them all on Clouser Deep Minnows. Even caught a Freshwater Drum or two.

This Wiper was 18.5", but may not have been the biggest of the day:

This was one of the smaller Wipers:

    And a little Drum:

Typically, the Wiper bite continues on strong from now and into October, water temperatures permitting.
The trick is finding them, and matching the size of the shad they are gorging on. As far as location, all you can do is hope they will chase the shad into/near the shoreline you are standing on. Surface blow-ups are exciting, and there was plenty of that going one when I was there. It did eventually die down though. Supposedly early mornings and late evenings are best for Wipers...but we got lucky and caught them chasing shad right in the middle of the day.

I catch Striped Bass behind the Carter's Lake spillway all the time. They like anything shad-shaped or colored. Grey and White Puglisi-style flies, and Polar Minnow patterns work really well. Clouser Minnows in Fire Tiger colors are especially deadly for them.

Interesting you should mention that. A buddy of mine caught an 18+ lb Wiper (Hybrid) on a fire tiger crank bait.

I think it is because, while they mostly chow down on shad, they consider a stray bluegill a special tidbit. Can't say that I blame them..... Here are two of my best striped bass patterns.....both Puglisi-style.
