The Copper Jake was first tied during the 2010 season in an effort to bring together a nymph for the Slate Drake hatch which is prevalent in many of the waters I visit. It proved to be a very productive pattern and has remained in my box since. It does well as intended, and also as a darker general search pattern on most any water. It was originally tied in Pheasant tail fashion, forming the tail of turkey tail fibers as well. I quickly decided the fibers were too soft and fragile for the tail in my opinion, and changed to the moose body hair. It was named in honor of the feathers used from the Jake I harvested during the Spring Gobbler season that very same spring.
