Default carp, the smallie anglers bonus fish - from Harry Murray

Hope this link works, as smallie season is HERE

To hijack my own thread, my wife and I were golfing at a local resort area to celebrate our 36th, a windy spring day. We crossed a small lake and I spotted several large fish taking something off the top. I stopped on the bridge and saw carp taking tulip poplar bloom petals that were blown of the trees. Murph tossed a cracker and he took that readily, but refused the second cracker, the petals were better, I guess. So, if it is windy, fish for topwater carp, just like we use streamers for trout when the water is high?

I don't know about streamers; might work. If you can find carp sipping stuff off the top and mimic it the fishing can be great. I have a few cottonwood seed flies in my box; haven't tried other things.

Carp can really be a bonus when fishing for smallies. I have only caught 4 carp in my life, all while chucking & ducking large streamers for smallmouth bass. Those carp really put up a strong fight and can spool you very fast. So, while I don't target them, if I hook into one I totally enjoy the fight. I hooked into one once when I was in a drift boat on a large pond and it towed us across the pond before I could get it in. Larry ---sagefisher---

Try a terrestrial pattern. I caught some on a bee pattern once, but I fished it as if it was a nymph. Even terrestrials will drown and sink. It worked for me.
