I saw alot of these hit the water as I mowed around my pond and thought it might be a useful fly.

    Fred,

Very nice. What did you use and how the heck did you make those legs? You obviously don't think any sort of hackle is needed so I'm guessing that the outrigger type legs keep the fly afloat?

The fly is mostly deer hair and thread . The legs are mono tippet . The fly sits in the water film boyant but not high floating.

What is the life expectancy of a fly like that? Pretty and rugged are frequently strangers.

The legs are monofilament and are tie to the hook ,very sturdy. The body is mostley deer hair and thread and it is very durable. Fishing trout or bluegills would play a big part on how long it lasts also . Either way it should outlast most flies thrown at either. I tend to do more damage to these with my forceps, removing them from the fish's throat than the fish can do to them.
