I don't know if there is a difference between types of Steelehead, but for tributary run Steelies and Chinook nothing less than an 8wt. and a good reel with an adjustable drag. My Steelehead rod is 9'.
kaboom: ya gotta look at the Dan Craft FT series in 10'--they're INCREDIBLE steelhead sticks. The new Rainshadow RX8+ 9'6" 7wt would be a strong contender as well.
We find most who chase steelies on the fly prefer between 9' and 10' sticks in 7 or 8wt, with the majority going in favor of 9'6" or 10' for the extra mending power, etc.
Good luck on your quest!
