Default avoiding split shot for spring steelheading

I don't like putting split shot on my leader but weight is often necessary in the spring. As I usually fish with at least one nymph imitation I came up with a heavily weighted version of a hex nymph (or wiggler to those of us who grew up fishing for perch in lake Michigan). Tied with a strip of lead wire the full length of top of the hook shank so it will ride point up and adding a 5/16ths bead and about ten wraps of wire shoved up into the bead makes it at least as heavy as a BB split shot. I then tie more tippet material to the bend and add an egg, a stonefly nymph or both. If you don't like split shot try it with your favorite big nymph pattern.
I can think of few acts more selfish than refusing a vaccination.

I'm sure it works good but it seems a hell of a lot of trouble compared to just pinching on a split shot. Seems an extra two knots would potentially cause more problems than a gently pinched split shot.

    Just being the devil's advocate.

Since I often use a hex nymph anyway the only extra work is in tying it heavily weighted. I've also used black copper johns in place of stonefly nymphs for the same purpose. No kinked leader from split shot and no shot thrown off the leader.

I use a size 12 Nymph with an under body of lead wrapped the length of the hook, with a large Tungsten bead head. If that does not sink fast enough then try two of them tied together NZ style.
    All the best.

Weight is weight.....and if you're already fishing dual-nymphs then why not. When compared head-to-head I think splitshot of equal weight will have a faster sink-rate...just due to profile. But in the end, it's whatever system works best for you.
