Default photographing hook point up flies

Has anyone had any experience with photographing these patterns? I tried to shoot my bead head Hex nymph that I like to use in place of a sinker for spring steelhead but the reversed hook leaves much of the fly blocked by the vise head. I tried holding it in a clip in front of the backdrop and shooting the picture with my other hand but I just can't hold steady enough for that.

Mount it in the vise point down. After you load it into the computer, use your editing software to flip it over.

You can just sit them on a board like this

Or leave them in a vice, then rotate them in your photo editing suite like this

    All the best.

Why don't you send this idea to FAOL for the "Tying Tip" Section....it has be quiet for a long time, with no imput by members of FAOL....

Currently I am busy with the last of 5 Beginner's Only Fly Swaps....

April is the Terrestrial Fly Swap, having already completed the Soft Hackle, Nymph, Dry Fly & Streamer Swap

At the end of the April Swap I will be annoucing the graduates of this years class of Beginner's Only, but they from that point on will never be beginners anymore...kdproctor was a member of my swaps a couple of years back...

Many of the Swapmeisters on the FAOL Fly Swap Board were part of previous Beginner's Only Fly Swaps

thanks guys. I don't know why I didn't think of laying it on the table. All that weight in the keel does make it sit right for a picture. Shooting it in the vise and rotating the picture doesn't work well for this fly. most of the material is on the top which becomes the invisible bottom when inserted into the vice with the hook point on the bottom.

Also try placing it on a sheet of glass or a mirror.

I position the camera where it can capture the the portion of the fly I want to highlight. In this case the camera would be lower than the vise head a little. and point up at the fly.

If you vise jaws rotate you can always rotate to an optimal position for photos.

If you have a scanner you can put the fly on the scanner andjust scan it. Doesn't work as well for dry flies but works great for streamers.
