I made my first open-water fly fishing outing after work yesterday. Pond had some ice on it still, but was mostly open. Caught 10 crappies and 4 bluegills in 45 mins. Hit the same pond tonight...all ice was gone. Caught at least 30 crappies and 19 bluegills, then walked over to another nearby pond that was 50% ice-covered and caught 4 more bluegills. Also fly fished a different pond during lunch today. The pond was >60% ice-covered, and the open water was rimmed with a wide band of gunk/algae/weeds. Only caught one bluegill there.
