    Default Budget backing suggestions

Folks, I have 3, 4, 5 & 6 weights & nice lines, but I need backing. I have always used 20 lb test & see no need to go heavier. My issue is the high cost of "backing". We have all seen threads regarding tippet substitutes, so now I'm asking for inexpensive backing substitutes available in bulk spools. Keep in mind that the fish I target with these rod weights ('gills, bass, trout, crappie, etc) will NOT take me into the backing.
Thanks in advance for your input.

    Mike,

If you're not worried about seeing your backing (except when looking at the spool from the side), just buy a 100 spool of the cheapest stuff you can find, divide it up and put a little on each reel. EBay has S/A dacron in 20lb 100yd for $7.89 and free shipping.

    Regards,

Go to your local Harbor Freight store.

They have the line you'd use in those chalk markers for really cheap. One 'spool' would fill five or six reels. Last time I looked, it was around $4. Comes in several colors.

If you don't have a Harbor Freight, check the tool sections of discount and dollar stores. They often have the same stuff very cheap.

You can also use thin twine found at any hardware store.

Even tho chalk line would fill spool quickly and do the job, I'd still want to go with something waterproof and not going to rot or decompose until your line. I believe a good choice is good old Dacron. Since the Superbraids have come out Dacron has dropped in price and I think the ivory color dacron with the green weave is a good looking line. Also available in some colors. There is no "need" to go heavier in # test like you said, but stepping up to 30# will get the spool up to where you want it a little quicker than 20#.

I'll probably get banned for this... But, if you don't mind the extra time it takes to arrive, the chinese have some pretty good deals. $17 + free shipping for 300meters...

    Chewydog,

'Mason Line'! Thanks, that's what I was trying to remember, not 'chalk line'.

I've used it for years on my reels, and it has outlasted several fly lines.

You'd spend $60 or more on a line, but not $5 on backing behind it??

Buy a bulk spool from Cabelas or some place. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabel...h-All+Products $33 for 600 meters.
