Scuds are the most popular flies on the White and Norfork Rivers... You either are not fishing the "right" ties or you could use a little advice...

At home in Louisiana, I've destroyed bream beds with a #14 scud...

Copper Johns are bad, but not nearly as horrible as Sparkle Pupae and Deep Sparkle Pupae. Seem like glorified Soft Hackles to me anyways, and arent nearly as versatile. Just my opinion though.

i do 90% of my trout fishing on the white and norfork. i fish the "ties" the local fly shops sell me and fish them like they tell me to. never a fish, never a tap. i can tie on a soft hackle. fish the same water and just hammer them.

That's odd. Copper Johns in copper, black, and red, and Sparkle Pupae in tan and olive are my most productive nymph patterns.

My buddies like Copper Johns. My son likes Copper Johns. Everbody I know likes Copper Johns. I am just snake bitten with them. I do use wire bodied Soft Hackles and do well at times, but the actual CJ has never done a thing for me.

I don't think I actually know anybody in person that has much good to say about the Sparkle Pupa though.

You folks must only talking about trout because except for the Kaufmann Stone, which is a bit too involved for me to tie, I've caught whitefish on every one of these flies, and I'm a terrible nymph fisher
