    Default Flies for Yellowstone (Park)

    I have a trip planned to visit and fish Yellowstone Park in early September. So I am working on filling my fly box for this trip and have several patterns suggested by Blue Ridbbon Flies. However, I would welcome any suggestion on patterns from my fellow FAOL members. Suggestions please on patterns and sizes for early September fishing in Yellowstone.

    Thanks.

    I have only fished there once, so I am not the person to answer your question. But it would probably helpful for others to know which rivers (or lakes) you plan to fish.

    Maybe you can find a hatch chart for that area, maybe on the DGIF site and then tie patterns to match or try and contact as many fly shops as possible and compose a list and compare and narrow down your selection. Another suggestion would be to take me along.

    Blue Ribbon's the best; can't go wrong with their recommendations. If you haven't done so, sign up for their free weekly newsletter (online). Dry fly fishing, terrestrials included, should still be good at that time.

    From BRF...

    Here are some FALL BAETIS/BWO patterns that lean more towards gray which I have found appropriate for MT:

    I've been there five times in the last five years in Sept. Rusty spinners, hoppers, Schroeder'; cdc and elk, black and pmd, sizes 14-18; adam's parachute 14 -18; Spruce flies, 8 -12.
    Nymphs, Brown rubber legs 8-12; pheasant tails;

    Oh, I forgot ants. 12-16; black, cinnamon and red and black. I tye a red and black cdc ant size 14.

    Probably the most important pattern then are various caddis patterns. If you fish Soda Butte, they have a drake hatch in September.
    If you fish the Madison at the West Entrance in late September, you will want big nymphs, big sothackles, and big streamers.

    8 pages worth of hatch charts/fly lists and discussion of the food, along with pages for each major river system.
