    Default February SOTM

For February I am planning a Medieval and Renaissance swap. All flies have to be a pattern (or modern adaption, by necessity...) of Thomas Barker (Oliver Cromwell's Cook..1651 AD), Claudius Aelinanus (Circa 200 AD), Izaak Walton (1653 AD), or Charles Cotton (1676 AD). Modern materials and hooks substitutions are acceptable as long as the pattern retains the original....flyness (???). You can find a lot of the patterns here at http://seventeenthcenturyflies.blogspot.com/.

On this swap, the research should be at least half of the fun.

I am a major history buff.

This is going to be great!

Just so everyone knows, I have an ulterior motive for this swap. It is my intention to make these flies into a display, with an exquisite frame, listing the tyers, and a brief description of each pattern, and it's originator. Then I am going to donate it to the local library, or City Hall, in a shameless attempt to promote the art of Fly Tying. I also plan to include a brief description of FAOL with the display.

I would also like to include a few (or all) of these in the Fly Tying Book that I am currently writing, if it is OK with the tyers. I won't list any real names...only FAOL handles. I will protect everyone's anonymity (unless you want your real name to be listed...and that's OK, too....).

If anyone does not want their fly in the display, let me know (by PM) and I will, of course, respect your wishes, no questions asked (but I reserve the right to fish with the fly....).

Looks like you assigned bob9's choice to me. I'm still looking. I've been tying 19th century bass flies (Dr James Henshall The Book of Black Bass). Guess I'll have to set the way back machine a little further back!

I think #10, Walton 's Wasp fly looks interesting.

Your list is wrong. I asked for Peacock Fly #31.

    To billhouk and Bob9:

Oooops! Sorry 'bout that. I have corrected it. I have about 10 things going on simultaneously right now. I will try to do better. My apologies.

Hey billhouk: When you host you could to an 18th and 19th century theme, if you want. That would be sooooo groovy. I would absolutely have no objections.
