Thread: Cutting UTC GSP

    Default Cutting UTC GSP

I was trying with this thread for the first time today and had a terrible time cutting it. I have a sharp pair of Dr. Slick razor scissors but we don?t seem to be cutting it. Anyone else have this problem?

They make scissors for cutting spectra/kevlar fishing line. That is what I use, work fine. Look in the non-flyfishing section of your local sporting goods store, or online.

I would get a dedicated scissor for this, and not use the ones I use for other materials.

Had the same problem, got a pair of Kershaw Skeeter scissors with the serrated edge, they work great.

Same here. The serrated edge seems to help.

Haven't found anything cordlike yet a pair of kitchen or paramedic shears won't cut...they just aren't very precision.

I've found if you put tension on the thread as you cut it works great. Without tension the GSP seems to bend around the scissors and only cuts a few strands.

So long as your scissors are sharp it is more a matter of technique. Hold your scissors by the joint between thumb and forefinger, placing your second or third finger in the outer loop. Open the scissors a touch to form a small V with the points. Hold the thread, put the V around the thread and slide down to the hook shank. Then push.

This technique is also good for cutting in among other materials you don't want cut. Anything you are not holding on to will just be pushed out of the way.

    Cheers,
    A.

The only time I've had trouble with cutting that stuff (I use Razor scissors) is when the scissors are not sharp. Send 'em back and they'll sharpen them for you. I just don't like to switch scissors just to cut thread, so I'll stick to the razors...
