Default Pan Fishing? Do you use split shot or float?

Wanna catch some gills on Saturday. Have caught some on top with littl spider guys, BUT what is the best way? I now have black crickets, chernobyl (sp) ants, littel black ants and such. Do ya float 'em or put some shot on and sink 'em?

    Dear Mark,

If you have some decent sized floating flies in that selection, like size 8 or 10, why not tie a section of tippet to the bend of the hook and add a nymph to trail behind it?

I've done pretty well recently with a foam monstrousity I've tied in a size 6 with a Clouser swimming nymph in a size 8 hanging below it. Even the size 6 dry fly can be eaten easily by a willing bluegill.

    Best Wishes,
    Avalon

I just walked in the door from catching about a dozen blue gills in a couple of hours on a particular fly. It's a #12 Theo's Bomber (pink and black). I'm down in Florida so I don't know if it works everywhere but I know in the lakes I fish in.......it's the best!

    Regards,

Pick out a foam fly with lots of legs (I like a size 10 or 12), and then tie a nymph with some sort of sparkle on it (go with a size 14 or 16 here) as a trailer. This will drive them wild. This combo has been known to yeild two fish at once for me.
