Loop in the butt of the leader, and loop to loop connection. I have never had a problem with the butt of the leader cutting into the loop.
Are you using the handshake loop to attach the two? Here's a video demonstrating the method:

yes ,i did when they first came out. now i snip them off right away , nail knot a section of amnesia on with a perfection loop to attach the leader

I cut them off and do a line to mono weld with a loop, then loop to loop the leader to it..makes a water proof end of fly line..

The coating did strip off the welded loop of one of my ( WF4F Rio ) lines after rather heavy, extended use with a thread furled leader. But it hasn't made any difference in the performance of the line and I see no reason to do anything about it.
Not sure if the Shorb loop of the thread furled leader had anything to do with the coating coming off the welded loop in the tip of the line, although I suspect that it does have a bit more "bite" than the butt loop on a mono or fluoro leader.
