Dave -

For anything other than very small nymphs, I go to a fast action Sage Fli 9' for 7 wt rod with a Rio WF7F line and a furled fluoro leader with incorporated tip ring. I usually add about 2' of 2X mono tippet. The furled fluoro leader lets me reposition the indicator quite easily.

That set up handles two large weighted stonefly nymphs under a large thingamabobber with no problem, and at some distance. It handled Jeff's Pine Squirrel Crawfish under a thingamabobber "easily".

Regarding repositioning the thingamabobber - if you run the tippet then the leader through the little loop on the indicator, then tie a simple overhand knot over it, the thingamabobber will stay in place quite nicely. When you want to move it up or down the leader, just loosen the overhand knot, open it up, slide the indicator in the desired direction, and then tighten down on the knot.
