Thread: Run Off 2012

    Arrow Run Off 2012

Time to take a look back.

As part of my thread on the Lochsa on the Fishing Reports Forum, I put together a slideshow covering the period 3-25-12 through 6-25-12. Click on the pic ( taken 2-3-12 ) to get started.

The run off peaked in late May. For the first couple weeks after March 25, it was basically nymph fishing. Then the fishies started hitting dries - to start with skwalas for a couple weeks, then overlapping that little stonefly with salmonflies, which caught fishies for well over two months. Golden stone adults and green drakes made their appearance not long before the slideshow ends.

The show documents numerous spots and their residents, with a few graphs thrown in to illustrate flows through run off. The blue line on the graphs marks the daily streamflow, and the line of triangles marks median streamflow for a given date over 84 years of history.

A lot of pix, and the slideshow may be repetitious for some - but the changes in the streamflows and where the fishies would hang at any point made for a challenging, fresh experience day by day along the way.

    John

P.S. Once you access the slideshow, you can scroll through the individual pix one at a time by using the "next" icon at the upper right of the pic frame. They do appear in the reverse order shown in the slideshow.

When I attended the September FAOL Fish-In at Lowell Idaho (junction of the Lochsa & Selway Rivers that join and become the Clearwater River. I noticed while traveling down US 12 all of the pools runs and drop off along the Lochsa River from Lolo Pass to Lowell Idaho. I also noticed all the large rocks, that each year get moved during the early summer months, when there are chartered large inflated raft rides down the Lochsa River, this happens every year....

I noticed the same thing happening on the Selway River....

Actually, I've not seen this kind of activity on the stretches of the Lochsa that I fish. Further on downstream they do get a bit crazy, but it is Memorial Day weekend, just about the peak of the run off.

When I first read the title of this thread "Run Off 2012" I thought it had something to do with the upcoming election. Glad I checked - it is much more interesting.... and the ads really haven't started yet.
