It could be a black rat snake or a black racer. Although it is awfully thin for one, might, conceivably, be a melanistic phase of a common king snake or even a bull snake. The first two snakes listed are the most likely. Black racers have a bad reputation for inflicting painful bites. I can confirm this from my youth.
I still like 'em.

As for that snake eating toads, I'm far too large to fear being eaten by any native species of snake. Rainbowchaser has seen me and knows this.
