Thread: Flyfishing Scotland

    Default Flyfishing Scotland

I've just accepted a two-year post in West Lothian,Scotland, UK (Just West of Edinburgh). I'll be there around October, 2006 to October 2008.

As an avid fly-fisherman from Pennsylvania, I'm excited about the opportunity to fish in Scotland. However, I'm at a loss as to what I should bring over, or how to go about licenses, access, etc...

So, Is there anyone on the boards who has fished Scotland? Better yet, anyone who lives in Scotland and wouldn't mind giving a Yankee a few pointers?

    Thanks in advance. Ed

    Hey Schuured,
I envy your assignment. I have heard that the prerequisite for fishing in Scotland is MONEY. Mostly private clubs and waters there with very limited public access. But,having said that, I'm told it's quite the palce for fly fishing.
    Enjoy your stay.

schuured, Alan Goodwin is an excellent source of info. He goes by the name Alan the Highlander.
I am sure an e-mail to him will get you the results you are looking for.

schuured, most of the salmon fishing in Scotland is private but lots of places have day tickets available. There is heaps of open water for trout fishing, some is private but most is available to the general public.
Many hotels and pubs have fishing rights on nearby waters.Almost any loch bigger than a large puddle will have trout in it.
The first place to look is the Scotish Tourist Board.
Obviously the local tackle shops will be able to sort you out.
Hope you have a great time, you will find the Scots are a friendly and open race who love a good laugh.
    All the best.
    Mike.

You might also get in touch with Donald Nicholson, who frequents this site. I'm sure he would be happy to give a fellow FAOLer a helping hand. He is an excellent fly tyer and fisherman.

Thanks all, for your advice and direction. I'll have a lot of research to do over the next couple of months.

I fished the Tweed River last month for trout. Most of it is controlled by the Tweed River Assoc. Rod fees per day for trout were seven pounds, about $12.50. Salmon fees are much much more. I heard a figure of 1000 pounds per rod per day.
Lots of strange rules, salmon anglers of course have priority on the river in all ways.
Weather was quite cool and no hatches were showing although it was time for the large drakes. I caught a good number of fish but all were very small. Did not see any salmon caught even though there were a few in the river. Enjoyed the experience.
