Thread: Leader Storage & Afterwards

    Default Leader Storage & Afterwards

I tie leaders in 9' and 12' lengths.I then wrap the leader around my 4 fingers, starting with the tippet and and ending with the butt wrap around the coils several times to keep it from unraveling. They're then stored in a 3"X4" poly bag for easy identification and convenience sake.
However here is where my problem starts.................
Upon taking them out of the bag and unwrapping the butt end from the coils, I'm usually faced with a tangled mess.
Anyone have a system to prevent the tangles?

Before you put your reel on, drape the coiled leader over the real seat, "untangle" the butt end and give it a slow pull. It will usually unwind the whole thing.

    Thank-you,George!
After 40 years you would think I could have thought of that.
    Works like a charm.

I pinch the coils and just start unwrapping from the butt ends one coil at a time, that way if you encounter a tangle, you don't have the whole mess to deal with.

You might want to try furled leaders. If you go to the "Furling" Forum there is a thread titled "What are the benefits?" that will give you some ideas about their advantages.

    Thanks, John.
I have about 1/2 doz furled leaders from the fly goddess.
I alternate back and forth between the two.

I think I need a leader straightener or something, because I just leave the darn thing coiled on the reel.

i just put it over my four fingers, keeping tension on it. Then unwind the butt twists and uncoil one coil at a time.
