Hook's by design are butt heavy, because of the mass of weight in the hooks curve and the spear that is under the hook shank. The hook shank needs a counter-weight of non-lead wire wrapped around the hook shank in the middle of the hook shank. I use 0.015 diameter non-lead weight wire. This this is use for all of my nymph patterns, and most of my emerger patterns. It is also used on my streamers and salmon hooks.
If you want a fly pattern that is not a true dry fly pattern to rest on/in the water film, then you need to wrap some buoyant material around the hook shank to help reduce the anchor weight caused by the hook's curve and spear.
End result is a better presentation of the fly pattern when casting to the fish..... ~Parnelli
