Default Fishing in Saratoga Springs, NY

Will be visiting my son at the Naval nuke school there this week.
Anybody familiar with any fly shops in the area I can visit for some info on fishing in the area.
I've already got a NY license for salmon/steelhead fishing so I might as well get some more use out of it!
    Thanks in advance

The Ausable River near Lake Placid should be hot for brown trout now. Visit the Hungry Trout fly shop or Fran Betters Fly Shop in Wilmington.

I prefer fishing there at monument falls. Bring plenty of dry flies (hendrickson, caddis) and if you hit a good hatch, you will be into them.
There's no sense in being dumb unless you get to show it off once in a while...

There's a ton of excellent water up there. I've never stopped in at the Hungry Trout but Fran's shop is real good. Also Jones Outfitters in Lake Placid. You'll be a good hour and a half or more away from the Lake Placid area, but I strongly suggest getting up there. Beautiful country, beautiful rivers and streams...i'm jealous.

The Ausable was 5 or 6 feet above normal Sunday. It rained Friday through Sunday while I was there. The river does go down fast but I would guess by Thursday it should be fishable. Should still be some March Browns...Take the Northwat up to exit 30. Follow the signs to either Whiteface or Lake Placid. Fish the West Branch. It is probably only 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 hour ride from Saratoga.

Thanks guys, don't know if we're gonna get up that far this trip.
But now I can plan another trip if I don't fish this trip.
I'll post if I get to fish!

    Fisher,

The Schroon River is about 30(?) miles north on the Northway. Not sure if the trout will be there though or where there's public access. I believe the Battenkill is within an hour as well.

Local streeams are Geyser Brook in the park by SPAC outskirts of Saratoga. The Kayderaserass is a fair sized stream quite close to Saratoga and through Ballston Spa.

The Hungry Trout fly shop is now under the ownership of the folks who also own the TCO Fly Shop.

Yes LF, they are leasing it. Mike Witwer is managing it for them. Mike used to manage it for Jerry Bottcher owner of the Hungry Trout, left to work in Pa. for TCO and now is back. H.T. is A great place to stay. Super restaurant too! The Sports bar downstairs was just voted one of the top fishing bars in the country.
