    Default Flies by Royce Dam

    Hi,
Someone mentioned the great tier Royce Dam in a recent posting. I thought some would enjoy seeing the flies in a shadow box of his. Sadly, he is gone (as I understand), but he was a wonderful guy and a great tier.

    Byron,

Very nice. I met Royce at a show maybe a dozen years ago and for a couple of years we tyed at adjacent tables at that annual show. I stopped attending that show, hadn't seen him since and did not know he had passed away. Sorry to hear that. He was always friendly, funny in his own way, and instructive when I watched him tye. His methods were often unique and his flies were tyed with uncanny precision.

Awesome shadow box. Definately something to be proud of. I especially like the stonefly nymph and the mouse? second. Take good care of it, keep it out of the sun.

The amazing thing about Royce Dam, if you never met him, is that he was a really big guy. He looked just like Ward Bond of the old tv series "Wagon Train". Sounded just like him too!

His hands were 1 1/2 the size of "normal" hands. Yet, he could tie delicate tiny flies with those huge hands. Wonderful guy. Buzz Buzick (sp?) award winner too!!!

    Byron,

Now maybe we're talking about 2 different people but the Royce Dam I knew was about 5'8" tall and maybe 150#s or 160 if dressed and sopping wet. You have the right tyer but wrong description. You might if you have his book, take a look at the back cover for his head shot photo.

For others who knew Royce, how would you physically describe him?

That's how I remember him. I didn't mention his weight. But I recall him as being large and looking just like Ward Bond.

The picture in the fly plate of his on this site (scroll down to it) looks like the Royce I knew. It was a number of years ago. Perhaps he really slimmed down.
If the photo there does not look like Ward Bond (with glasses) you haven't watched "Wagon Train".

nd, if you read the comments by Gary Borger in Royce's book "Practical Fly Tying", Gary says: "And with those massive hands of his............".

    Byron,

Let's see: Royce was 5'8" and maybe 155#s. Ward Bond was 6'2" and 200+#s. Close enough to confuse the two no doubt!

In that Bass Pond photo, is that Royce?

The face.....................and the handlebar mustache.............did you look at the photo?

Guess I was wrong about his "massive hands" too.

Okay, you're right(sic). If it wasn't that one man was 5'8", 155#s and thin while the other man was 6'2", well over 200#s and heavy, they'd be identical! LOL
