    Default Auckland

Hi Guys, I managed a trip out to the local reef with a couple of visitors from the UK we strugled a bit due to the easterly wind but we did manage a couple of good Kahawai, they are one of the best fighting fish in NZ.
Here are a couple of pics of the biggest one.

    All the best.

Nice kahawai Mike. I agree as to the fighting ability of the kahawai. I feel they have been taking lessons from their King Fish cousins.

My Quest for a Kingi on the fly has as yet to be realised. My Fishing buddy Dick has landed four Rats so far. Seems the fish like my flies but not me. Boo Hoo Boo Hoo!

A point of interest we are targeting Sting Rays and fish over them to catch the Kingies that use them as bait fish flushers. Great fun .[I think "G"] Jax

Hi Jax, targeting the stingrays is a good way to go in your neck of the woods, not so good in Auckland as the flats are mostly too soft for safe wading and the visibility is not so good.
As a matter of interest one of the UK visitors managed to hook a big eagle ray on his 6# fly rod, it gave him a hell of a fight, I think if we tried a crab pattern we could probably hook up to rays more often, though I am not sure I would want to tangle with some of them!
    All the best.

Very nice kahawai Mike! They are great fun, and would be a real hoot on a fly.

Cheers Jeff, they are great fun on the fly rod! The next 2 weeks are busy for me but after that I will be doing my best to get a few more if you would like to come along?
    All the best.

Let me know when you're heading out next. I might be able to make it if all is well with the kids.
