    Default First Flies

I finally jumped in the deep end last night and here's what came out. Pheasant Tails on the left and EZ-Nymphs on the right #16's and #14's of each. Not the prettiest, but I don't think I'll feel as bad leaving these in the trees as the $1.49 jobs I've been using! Of course with all the materials I've been buying, these come to about $5 each! Later ones should be cheaper....right?

    The flies look good.
I hate to say it but tying flies to save money is like buying a Ferrari to save on gas, it's possible but not likely to succeed. For the same reason you posted you keep buying more and more materials. Tying is cheaper than fishing for most of us as we can buy a lot of materials for the gas it costs us to get to the water.

I really wasn't expecting to save anything, but it makes a good excuse for the wife! Besides, she bought me the vise 10 years ago, knowing I wanted to get into tying and flyfishing. It took me a little while to get going, but thanks to FAOL, I'm enjoying the heck out of it! Luke

Pretty darn good for your first flies! I wish my first batch was that nice. If you can, figure about how many files you can make with the material then divide the price. I figured out a few of my flies at $0.30 or so. Way better than two bucks or more per fly. Plus it is fun to catch fish on your own flies.

Good flies, Luke. I figure, not counting my time, I broke even between one and two thousand flies in. Counting my time, I am so far in the hole it isn't funny.
