Default My Variation of LaFontaine's "Duck Butt Dun"

    Hi,
Was in an interesting discussion of the "proper" type of deer hair to use for a comparadun/sparkle dun pattern. I opened up my old book by LaFontaine "TroutFlies - Proven Patterns". He wanted a comparadun style fly with a trailing shuck. He tried a number of materials and settled on CDC fibers. He called his pattern "The Duck Butt Dun".

I can only surmise that Craig Mathews may not have been tying one with zelon as the shuck at that time. Not sure though. The book was published in '93.

Anyway, this is my variation using CDC and Deer Hair for the wing as opposed to just deer hair, but using his CDC for the shuck.

This is a pic of a pic of LaFontaine's Duck Butt Dun:

Nice Byron, one of the main reasons I like CdC drys is that they land more gently on the water than many others. I know sometimes you want them to plop down, but when you don't CdC is the way to go. Have you ever tried an MP style dun? They are no more difficult to tie than your Sparkle / Comparaduns, but very different. CdC fibres in either a dubbing loop or split thread, wound as a thorax but teased up as you wind. Then split with floss to make wings. If you want flies for streams then they are good.
    Cheers,
    A.

I tie a fly almost identical to yours(no deer hair), great fly but it sinks fast. Treat with watershed at the time of tying to help them float. After catching 1 fish the fly must be changed and dried before it will float again. Tie a bunch and change flies constantly. They catch a lot of fish!
The man who coined the phrase "Money can't buy happiness", never bought himself a good fly rod!
