Was in an interesting discussion of the "proper" type of deer hair to use for a comparadun/sparkle dun pattern. I opened up my old book by LaFontaine "TroutFlies - Proven Patterns". He wanted a comparadun style fly with a trailing shuck. He tried a number of materials and settled on CDC fibers. He called his pattern "The Duck Butt Dun".
I can only surmise that Craig Mathews may not have been tying one with zelon as the shuck at that time. Not sure though. The book was published in '93.
Anyway, this is my variation using CDC and Deer Hair for the wing as opposed to just deer hair, but using his CDC for the shuck.
