It's Cold! What is everyone tying?

Hi All,

What is everyone tying this winter?

I am in bad shape for nymphs, but wanted to tie streamers since they are more fun to tie, but first things first. At any rate, I have been tying nymphs, serendipities, but also a few midges and streamers for winter stocker trout here in the Texas panhandle.

Here's what I have been working on:

Nymphs: both standard and olive gold ribbed hares ears, and Dave Whitlocks red fox squirrel nymphs, sizes 8 to 16, depending on the pattern

Serendipities: four different patterns, sizes 14 to 20 depending on the pattern

Flies for winter stockers, not very many, but: dries, emergers, and nymphs in olive, dun, and cream, plus pheasant tails and griffiths gnats, mostly in #18, and also tied some small streamers to represent silver shiners.

Next to tie: pheasant tails, then weighted and bead head nymphs of the same varieties listed above

It's cold here, the wind chill is 10 degrees and below. I have fished for winter stockers some, but it has been cold the last couple of weeks and I have stayed inside. It's been nice to be inside after chruch today, tie flies, watch the snow, and take a good nap.

It is supposed to get into the 50s much of this week, so hopefully the stocker fishing will pick up, and I can try to catch one or two on Saturday afternoon.

Also working on a series of flies specially for the middle position on a team of three.


Had to tie some river flies and traditionals just to keep my hand in.


Then there are my bread and butter salmon flies,

Just about to start tying silly numbers of Ammonite Nymphs.

I got off my butt and started tying for the local river to fill up some gaps in the boxes: a couple dozen CDC midges in 20 and 22, and several dozen BWOs in 18; summer flies for the mountain streams, 4 dozen or so CDC caddis in 16, and a dozen or so in 14 and 12; and flies for the Idaho fish-in, #16 and #18 ants, 7 dozen so far. Still got those big Octobers to tie, but I have been highgrading and setting aside CDC as I tie the rest, makes it easier to find those big mallard CDC feathers I need for the 8s and 10s.

Those are some very nice-looking flies. Thanks for sharing them. Some day I might have the chance to fly fish a lake, or maybe even a loch.

Alan, beautiful job. Wish my boxes looked 1/4 as good. Nice ties, and very nicely organized. I don't think I could keep my fly boxes neat if they had 10 flies in them. Thanks for the great pictures.
