Since most of my fishing is within 40 miles of home, I don't always carry an extra rod. The times I do, it's really because I'm indecisive about exactly where I am going to fish or what I'm going to fish for. However, I always carry my gear bag with lots of extra leaders, tippets, reels, etc. This is not because of my "Be Prepared" Boy Scout training, but because I tend to forget things. Before I organized all my stuff together, I once went fishing and discovered I had forgotten to bring a reel. I also went on a 4 day camping/fishing trip and forgot to bring any bedding of any type. If I ever lose my mind, it'll be because I forgot where I put it.
