Thread: How many rods do you own?

I'm ashamed to admit it but I have more than anyone has stated so far. There are steel, bamboo, graphite, and maaany Fiberglass (over 50). Many are colectable, but I've fished about 1/3 of them. My friends say that I should try to fish all of them in one year. No Way.

There was a time in the past when I planned to acquire a new fly rod every year, and did so. I still have a small number of those rods including ones that I got 30 or more years ago and haven't fished in ages, but knowing that I'd probably never actually fish more than a few rods I began disposing of my collection a decade or so ago.

I still buy a new rod from time to time (and reels too), and I still have some surplus ones to dispose of, but I find that a half dozen or so rods, reels and lines cover all my fishing pretty well. In fact, I fish in Montana practically every day each year from mid-May to early October with just 3-4 rods. This includes lakes, small streams and large rivers, fishing wets, dries and streamers.

I think some of us more seasoned citizens have spent a long time acquiring rods, and reels, too, till for some of us they have become disposable. So far, the first half of my life I have collected them, and now in my second half(I hope), I am disposing of some of those that aren't my absolute favorites, or are more saleable than others. Just plain silly to have a problem storing them. Let someone else enjoy them. Haven't bought but one "new" rod in many years, but they still seem to accumulate.

I have over sixty rods. About a third of those are fly rods.

    9. I've got one more swap...a 5wt for a 9wt which I'll have done by the end of the year (deal in the works). Then, as my new year's resolution, no more purchasing rods or reels for 2012! Since I started this obsession 12 yrs ago, I have had probably 70 different rods. I really believe I have exactly what I truely like and need satisfied. The bases are covered and I want to just focus on fishing and tying flies in the new year!
