Thread: The Alabama Rig

    Default The Alabama Rig

The lure is called "The Alabama Rig."
It's the newest innovation that's taking the largemouth bass
community by storm. The Alabama Rig is catching so many
fish in the professional bass tournaments that many anglers
are trying to have it banned.

    Professional Bass Angler Paul Elias.

For you fly fisherman who've never heard of an Alabama Rig you might want to
stop right now and go on www.Google.com ... then type in "Alabama Rig".
It is actually several lures combined on a wire frame similar to
an umbrella ... known commonly among anglers as "an umbrella rig."

East Coast striper fisherman have been using the umbrella rig to
trawl for stripers for years... But it took a Southern Boy to scale
it down so you could throw it with a casting rod.
(And you thought because we talk slow that we are dumb)

Now "what" you may ask has this to do with fly fishing? Well if it
works so good as a lure... catching 2, 3, even 4 fish on one cast...
I wonder how it would work as a fly? So having more free time than good sense...

    I give you.....

    TA... DA...

Not going to work on a 3 wt.

I believe I will continue to propose my corolary "The number of problems with your line and flies is approximately in direct proportion to the square of the number of flies connected to the line."

Not going to work here in The Island Nation. 3 hooks per line is the limit.

Only two hooks allowed here in Kansas, and that's usually enough to keep me tangled up most of the time
If it swims and eats, it'll eat a fly.

Yep, only 2 hooks allowed here in Az also. A single bait is considered 1 hook, even if it has doubles or triples on it.

Only 3 hooks allowed here in Tennessee, but, there is a gentleman that has come up with a version with only 3 hooks already! This rig is just another reason why I left the bass tournament trail over 20 years ago. There is no end to what some will do to have an edge when the prize is money!! What a shame......

Fly fishing and fly tying are two things that I do, and when I am doing them, they are the only 2 things I think about. They clear my mind.

I don't believe my light line fly rods will handle that brace of jigs.
When you can arrange your affairs to go fishing, forget all the signs, homilies, advice and folklore. JUST GO.

Unless the law has changed, three hooks are only allowed in TN if all are smaller than a size 6 in all dimensions. The end ambiguity about what a "size 6 hook" is, the TWRA has a PDF template. Save it and print it at 100%. If the length or gape match or exceed it, you get to use two hooks. Sounds good to me.
