Nice fish! What rod was it on?

It is a Fenwick, made for the Japanese market; a 3 pc , 6'10" , 7 wt called the "Floater Bum".

    Hi Bill,

Nice fish, great that you are still catching fish this late into the season.

    Regards,

Is that an automatic reel on the rod? That takes me way back to when my younger brother got his first fly rod and reel. It was a fiberglass rod and a horizontally mounted automatic reel. He still has that outfit.

No, it is the state of the art , Italian made, ATP 37 semi automatic fly reel. It has an adjustable drag and removable spools.

no big spring inside either and lighter than the old automatic fly reels of long ago. They are very popular in Europe.
    The "Floater Bum" is fiberglass.

That carp has some unusually large fins on it...Must have some "fantail" in its family tree?
    That's pretty COOL!

Do you think that fish may have started off in someone's goldfish bowl? The tail reminds me of some of the goldfish I see in pet shop, not to mention the coloration.

I wondered that too, since large goldfish CAN look a LOT like common carp. It COULD be a carp/goldfish hybrid...but if I recall correctly, pure-strain goldfish do not have barbells, which the fish in the picture does. Carp DO have barbells, however.

It could also be a pure-strain carp with a gene mutation that results in long fins. This occurs on rare occasions in many fish species.

    Very cool!

Why the lip grabber on the carp?
When you can arrange your affairs to go fishing, forget all the signs, homilies, advice and folklore. JUST GO.
