Thread: Thingamabobber slip-rigged

    Default Thingamabobber slip-rigged

Anybody ever rigged a Thingamabobber like a slip bobber? I am thinking about deep nymphing around here in the colder weather.

Why not. I have indies that are made to slip with the plastic dowel and a styro float (check my blog utahflygoddess) but, I think a thingy could work. Just put some kind of stopper like the Froghair ones. The only problem I see is the bend in the line with the thingamabobber. Mine are straight shots in the line.

Oh and deep nymphing is my favorite. I use up to 30' of straight fluoro.

    Fly Goddess,
Which flies do you use when you are deep nymphing? I'm thinking deep nymphing like you do could be very useful when trying to catch crappies, bluegill and perch when they decide to sink down out of range for the more common fly fishing techniques.

Chironomids most, but any nymph or even small buggers. I have a killer leech pattern also.

Joni, thanks for posting! I have one or two of your bobbers stashed away here somewhere... Never even thought about those. That should be perfect!

I drilled the peg out a little bigger. Big enough to slide over a furled leader ring. So I make a seven foot furled leader and add ten to twelve feet of fluorocarbon...ya know, I can actually cast it! The indicator holds well too on the furled, but no problem sliding when hit.

Try Cascade Crest Tools "slip and strike" indicators for fishing deep. Haven't seen a Thingamabobber rigged in a similiar fashion, but there's no reason you couldn't fashion a small peg to emulate the same behaviors, as Goddess recommends. Not sure why it would be worth the effort, considering there is a ready made solution, though. YMMV.

Because every time we do something, build something, modify something ourselves, we learn new skills. Or at least refine existing skills, or perhaps just enjoy making something instead of laying out more money.

Why bother tying flies when there are tons of ready made ones?

Re: the slip floats....easy to punch out a foam cylinder ...drill center hole ....and use the end of a used ball point pen for the peg...need to find a pen that has tapered end point...not all do.
