    Default ORTHODOXY - Readers cast (Neil M Travis) - July 18, 2011

    ORTHODOXY

Orthodoxy - the practice of observing established social customs and definitions of appropriateness.

Recently the Ladyfisher was fussing and fuming about something that she saw on the Internet. It was a fishing website [which shall remain unnamed] where someone was demonstrating how to fly cast.

I will have to find a custom builder to manufacture a 6 or 7 wt with a foil or epee inside. Then if we meet on the streamside, we can settle it like gentlemen. On the other hand a bodkin is also a type of easily concealed dagger.

i love to take newbies fishing. they arrive with all sorts of rules they've been taught. they are quite surprised when i make a few suggestions in the spirit of "whatever works." gee--more than one way to tie on a fly? more than one way to fish a nymph? more than one way to cast?

as soon as a neophyte begins to think for him/herself on the water and not worry if it's the "right" way, the sooner they have fun and begin to solve problems on their own.
fly fishing and baseball share a totally deceptive simplicity; that's why they can both be lifelong pursuits.

    Yep. I couldn't agree more.
Better to be an active environmentalist than and environmental activist.
