I'm telling people who book to bring long sleeves and headnets through August.

We're also telling anybody who wants to float the Yellowstone before the first of August that we'll potentially need to change out to a walk trip. :~(

Why? The late summer and fall fishing will be spectacular, with much easier fish for this time of year than usual, because the water will be higher, keeping the fish closer to the banks, and they won't have been pounded for as long. Just don't come the 4th of July and expect to float the Yellowstone except for whitewater thrills.

It's not just the Yellowstone but most of the major rivers and most of the smaller streams will not be approachable until late in the summer. The snow pack is at record levels, the snow is just beginning to melt [it's nearly the middle of June already] and it doesn't seem to want to quit raining. Call before you come.

Looks like I had better get the raft in shape or at least the canoe for the Montana fishin. The lake may be for the better fishing.

Made the mistake of fishing the Lamar last July without a headnet; the flies made me pay, dearly.

I think Walter's advice for long sleeves and a head net is a good one.

Mosquitoes are normally just a minor nuisance, mostly in the evening, here in Paradise Valley on the Yellowstone, and they are usually mostly gone by about mid-to-late July. (This year might be an exception, but I don't think they'll be THAT bad in most places here.)

I'm sure it will be quite a different story elsewhere.
