Yumdinger, Maybe you can locate a local fly fishing club and join up. My club has some folks who help others get started in fly tying, rod building and other aspects of our addic...I mean sport.
As far as tools. A cork reamer is just a rat tail file. About $5.00 at a hardware store. You can get a thread bobbin for a couple of bucks at a fly shop. A tensioner for thread can probably be found at a sewing machine shop or maybe a hobby shop. You can use a cardboard box for a rack. Lots of videos on you tube for tutorials. Good luck, and welcome to FAOL. Jim
I'm either going to, coming from or thinking about fishing. Jim

    First timer eh?

Well, welcome to the best fly fishing information site on the net.

You really don't have to spend 25 bucks for you first rod wrapper. Yo propbaly have all you need hat home as we speak. A cardboard box with a couple of noches cut in it will do nicely for a rod rack. You can run your thread through as heavy book for a tensioner and put the spool of thread in a coffee cup to hold it.

Save the 25 bucks for the components for that first rod!!

I sugesst that you read this series of articles before you start...great info here...

Brad's suggestions will work great but be sure to put a folded piece of heavy paper in the book where you run the thread through or it will damage the pages.
