Trip

This spring or summer, I am going on my first real fly fishing trip. Here's how it will be:
No guide
No hatch dates
We dont even know where on the river to fish
We dont know when the fish will spawn
Only one fly rod for 4 of us (looks like they are stuck with a worm on a spinning rod)
I dont know what fly to use.

So, first of all, what time frame can I expect salmon and/or trout to be there. This river is in Northern New Hampshire(swift river)

And what is a good general fly to start with If i have no idea what is hatching?

I know i should get a guide, But i have a sense of adventure, and am willing to try.

I think im pretty much screwed. Not only do I have only one fly rod, but non of us have fishing licenses...

One day non resident license: 15 dollars. Thats 60 bucks right there. Oh wait, they wont have to buy one cuz they wont have a rod to fish with...

They didnt put that river there!

OKay, now please be honest: Do you think they enforce that stuff up there?

oh yes! yes they do! out of state plates. i've been asked to show that expensive little piece of paper twice in the last 4 outtings

There are two Swift Rivers, which one are you planning on going to?
The one in Tamworth is a beautiful stream, the section from Heminway Forest to Tamworth center is fly fishing only.
The second is the river that runs east along the Kancamagus highway through the White Mountain National Forest.
It has normal state regulations.
The stream in Tamworth is very popular. People fishing with non fly fishing gear will not be tolerated
To need a fishing license in NH you need to be 16 or older.
A guide would not be needed on either river.

Flys on mountain streams can be very basic.
There is not alot of hatches and fish can be very opportunistic.

An important part of fly fishing is being a good sportsman.
Following the rules/law is part of the sport.
