    Default Filered water bottles

I am looking to purchase a filtered water bottle for the trips to the streams. Want to be able to dunk the bottle in the stream or lake and feel reasonably safe when drinking the water. Any thoughts or opinions on this.....?
    Thanks in advance

I've been using an Aquamira filter bottle for about 10 years and have never felt the wrath of Montezuma:

I've changed the filter 4 times, which is probably overkill (it's rated for 50 gallons before replacement). Only negative was that the plastic guard cap came off within the 1st year; doesn't effect performance.

I've got the older katadyn that you have to squeeze (can't sip) and it's definitely handier than carrying water, but took a decent amount of effort to get some water (you had to squeeze it with both hands pretty much). I see they have a newer one that you can sip on, so that may make it easier.

One word of caution is that it's not a water purifier. It'll get most cooties out of the water, but not chemicals or viruses. So use caution if you're around farmland. I use mine on backpacking trips as a backup in case my main filter goes out.

I also have the squeeze type Katadyn with the Virustat filter. So far in four years no problems. It is a little slow to get a good drink so I carry an empty water bottle that I squeeze it into to drink from.

I've used the Katadyn for about 10 years and no problems Less weight than a filled bottle and I always have cold water available. The squeezing doesn't bother me. One good squeeze is a mouthful of water.

    Filter purifications systems are passe.

I've used a Steripen for several years now. I think it is the best water purification system. No filters to buy. No filters that can go bad. No iodine pills that affect the taste.

Steripen kills viruses as well as Giardia and bacteria. I carry my Steripen in my Nalgene bottle with an extra set of batteries. I take it on trips to Mexico or anywhere the water is suspect. You can use it in a restaurant to purify the glass of water they bring.

I've never gotten sick since buying by Steripen.

How long does the steripen take to work and what volume of water can it treat at once? Can you stick it in a two-liter bladder?
