I finally got my first fish using a fly. I caught a bluegill on a bluegill popper. Although the rod I was using wasn't really a fly rod the fish hit a fly so I'd say that qualifies.

Excellent! Seems like the ice is off most everything down here in Omaha. I imagine you are all thawed out now, too?
Tomorrow is pike fishing out in the Sandhills.... hopefully my first "non-trout" comes in a similar fashion (but with the fly rod ).
Cycler68,
If that rod was a Tenkara rod, it is indeed a fly rod, with a rich history. Congratulations on your first of many fishes on the fly.

Happiness is wading boots that never have a chance to dry out.
Ron Eagle Elk,
The rod the fly was attached to was my new 18 ft. hera rod but the line was for a tenkara rod and the tippet was standard fly fishing tippet so I'd say I was almost fly fishing. Kidding aside, I think that for fly fishers who want to czech nymph with the fixed line rod a hera rod has great potential. They come in lengths much longer than tenkara rods, can easily handle the weight and yet are light enough so they aren't tiring to use.
