-Dont ever think "Oh carp are stupid. I can catch one of those with a fly"

I can think of few acts more selfish than refusing a vaccination.
And do whatever works. So what if your elbow is to low while your casting, or your leader isnt tapered. If it works, have fun with it now; worry about critiquing every aspect of your cast later on.
It is also the best advice I was ever given: "Save your fork"

Always wear eye glasses, either sun glasses, safety glasses,or prescription.
Fishing is not casting. And learn to mend.
Before you spend 5 or 6 hundred bucks on a rod, spend a couple hundred on casting lessons. Then practice, practice, practice. I used to go out to the water even on days when there was virtually no chance of catching fish just to get some real time casting practice. This is when I would push my envolope. Casting as close to the junk as possible, working on distance and fine tuned my presentation. It was more fun than out in the yard and every once in a while I did find a fish.
fly rod is NOT a spinning rod.......
treat it like a lady.......
don't be afraid to ask for help.
start with heavier weight leaders and work your way down.
Go with a seasoned veteran a couple times.....a patient one........
Will help you more than any video or book.
