Thread: Palmer chenille

    Default Palmer chenille

Have you guys seen this stuff???
I saw a pack at a store tonight and picked it up to try. It's made similar to boa yarn, but with pearl tinsel. The color I got is black pearl.
Just got done tying up some size 10 buggers using it as my hackle, and it looks KILLER! I may try tying up a couple "boa yarn leeches" with it for super clear water spots. It definitely got my creative juices flowing this evening!

    Hey Zac
I have used it a little bit this summer. I bought the rootbeer, pearl, and the copper UV. I made a few of the Murdich minnows. I have seen the Rainbow fly shop in MO tie a nice bugger with them.
    Good luck with them.

I got this from a place called Backwoods. Surely a place like Feather Craft carries it though...

I think that you'll find that "new" material is really just eyelash yarn. I been using it for bugger and other patterns for several years and I have it in many colors including metallic. You can find it on ebay by searching on eyelash yarn where it usually goes for about $3.50 per skein of 93 yards which is I suspect a bit less than the fly shop charges. I don't think that there are very many yarn products actually manufactured for fly tying since it is such a small, specialized market. Rather you'll find that it has been re-purposed, re-packaged and re-priced at a re-diculous profit. I'm not trying to knock any fly shops. This is a good product with lots of uses. I just trying to keep the cost down a bit.

Zac. The Palmer does look a lot like eyelash yarn. Could you possibly show us a photo of the two product side by side so we can compare.

    Thanks - Tim

I've used the large size for the Jointed Minnow:

    The pattern is here:

Here's a few other things I've used the various sizes for...

Dave. Thanks for the photos. They are some nice looking flies. From looking at your flies I can readily tell the difference between the eylash & palmer - So Zac please disregard my request.

I can't say about fly fishing but there's a lot of feed lots in Kansas.
