Thread: Elk hair caddis

    Default Elk hair caddis

What's your favorite combination for it. I mean body color and material, and hackle color. I love peacock bodies with brown hackle, which also seems to be a good option for the trout here.

    Waterfox,

I am sure there are many very effective variations on the Elk Hair Caddis, as originated by Al Troth, but one could argue that any EHC which does not has a dubbed body loses claim to that name

As to answer your question: when I started tying and fishing the CDC&Elk, I drew on the EHC as an inspiration. In it a single CDC feather provides both the body and the 'hackle'.

    Cheers,
    Hans W

I also tie my caddis with a peacock herl body, and use either a gold badger hackle or ginger hackle. Fish like it so it works for me .

When the sulphurs are hatching, I like the lemon CDC. Dark green when Caddis are coming off....unless they are black, then I change the color to black.....

I'd say the colors I use most often are olive dubbed body with brown hackle.

I like the tan body, brown hackle with a grey-ish tan elk hair wing. Also the herl body with grizzly hackle.

I tie and use mostly two colour combinations for the EHC.
    1) Light tan or cream dubbed body
    Cream hackle
    Bleached Elk Hock wing
And if Hans is correct, I can't claim the EHC name for this one
    2) Copper tinsel braid body
    Black hackle
Dyed black fine Deer hair wing
